Ruling out the possibility of joining either the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) or the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA), Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) supremo and former Uttar Pradesh chief minister Mayawati Wednesday said her party would go solo in the upcoming 2024 Lok Sabha elections as well as upcoming Legislative Assembly elections in four states.

In a thread posted on X (formerly known as Twitter), she said that both alliances consist mostly of parties that are “anti-poor, casteist, communal, pro-rich and capitalist, against whose policies BSP has always fought”.

“This is why, the question of contesting elections with them does not arise,” Mayawati said.

“BSP, like in 2007, will single-handedly contest the upcoming Lok Sabha and four state assembly general elections by uniting crores of neglected/scattered society on the basis of mutual brotherhood rather than the ‘jugaad’/manipulation of the opponents. Media should not spread misconceptions again and again,” she added.

She also asked the media to not spread “fake news” or misconceptions about BSP possibly aligning with either party.

The NDA is led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and consists of parties like All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), Lok Jan Shakti Party (Ram Vilas Paswan), National People’s Party (NPP), and others. The INDIA alliance is a cohort of several Opposition parties formed to challenge the BJP, and includes parties like Congress, Trinamool Congress (TMC), Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), and others.

Mayawati’s statement comes days after the expulsion of prominent western UP Muslim leader Imran Masood from BSP, over alleged indiscipline and anti-party activities. BSP leaders said the party was upset over the former Congress leader’s remarks praising Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi, and his call for the BSP to join the INDIA alliance.
