(File photo)The Manipur government on Friday sent eight Myanmar nationals back to their country, and is expected to deport a total of 77 people in the coming days.
“First batch of Myanmar nationals who entered India illegally deported today. Although India is not a signatory to the 1951 Refugee Convention, it has given shelter and aid to those fleeing the crisis in Myanmar on humanitarian grounds with a systematic approach,” said Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh.
Earlier this week, on Tuesday, the Manipur government’s Home Department had issued an order for the repatriation of 77 Myanmar nationals by transporting them from Imphal to the border town of Moreh through the State Helicopter Service and delivering them to the custody of Myanmar authorities at Tamu.
These 77 people include 51 women and five children, and they are all to be deported by March 11.
