Kuki-Zo groups set conditions for talks on April 5

Ahead of the April 5 talks between Kuki Zo and Meitei groups called by the Ministry of Home Affairs in New Delhi, the Kuki-Zo leadership of Kangpokpi district has proposed three “non-negotiable” preconditions for any cessation of hostilities.

The announcement came Tuesday after a consultation meeting was organised by the Committee on Tribal Unity (CoTU), Sadar Hills Kangpokpi district, in the presence of Kuki-Zo Council, the apex political platform representing the Kuki-Zo.

Kuki Zo Council chairman Henlianthang Thanglet said the three pre-conditions are that “the movement of Meitei individuals in Kuki-Zo-dominated areas and vice versa shall be strictly restricted, hostilities shall be halted for a minimum of six months to facilitate negotiations, a structured formal and meaningful dialogue process must be initiated during the ceasefire period.”

The consultation meeting witnessed the participation of prominent leaders from various Kuki-Zo civil society organisations, including the Kuki-Zo Council, Sadar Hills Chiefs Association, Kuki Inpi, student bodies, women’s organisations, and tribal representatives.
