Hitting out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi for not uttering “a single word on the economy in his election speeches”, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge on Monday slammed the central government for its “abject failure”.
In a post on X, he took pot shots at the NDA government over the country’s “manufacturing growth”, “export growth”, “widening trade deficit” and “diminishing clout” while comparing the numbers with the then Congress-led UPA at the Centre.
“Narendra Modi ji speaks about Mangalsutra, Mutton, Machhali, Mughal and Mujra, but does not talk about ‘Make in India’? Why Modi ji does not utter a SINGLE word on the Economy in his numerous election speeches? The answer lies in his Govt’s ABJECT FAILURE ! Make in India flopped, PLI Scheme floundered and Exports are in a free fall,” he said on X.
He wrote that the “Manufacturing Growth (at constant 2015 USD) under Cong-UPA for 2004-14 was 7.85%”, while under the “Modi-NDA for 2014-22, it was 6.0%”.

He added that “India’s Export Growth under Cong-UPA for 2004-10 was 186.59%, and for Cong-UPA for 2009-14, it was 94.39%” while “Modi-NDA for 2014-20, it was 21.14% and for “Modi-NDA for 2019-24, it was 56.86%”.
“Despite the 56-inch chest thumping, App-bans and Fake Nationalism, Modi ji made sure that China becomes India’s largest trade partner,” he wrote.
“Modi ji’s CLEAN CHIT to China, post the supreme sacrifice of our brave soldiers in Galwan, came with an ADD-ON GIFT,” he said.
Elaborating on the “Add-on gift”, he said “The import value of Chinese goods to India rose from $3.32 billion in June 2020 to $5.58 billion in July 2020 i.e. a whopping 68% increase. The difference between India’s import of Chinese goods is ?7 Lakh Crore higher than India’s exports, in just last year.”
Under the header, “Widening Trade Deficit, Diminishing India’s Clout”, Kharge wrote, “India, under Modi ji has recorded a Trade Deficit with 9 of its top 10 trading partners, including China, Russia, Singapore, and Korea, in 2023-24.”
“India’s Trade Deficit under Modi ji increased by a record 194.19%,” he said. He wrote that under “Cong-UPA” for 2013-14, the trade deficit was ?8.1 lakh crore, while for “Modi-NDA” for 2023-24, it was ?23.83 lakh crore.
