The Madhya Pradesh government has ordered the scrapping of the Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS), a system constructed in 2009-10 to promote public transport in Bhopal. In a meeting held at the state secretariat on Tuesday, Chief Minister Mohan Yadav discussed with his Cabinet colleagues, public representatives and senior officials about traffic problems arising out of the BRTS and decided to do away with the corridor. “The elected representatives of Bhopal district were of the opinion that the local transport will become more convenient by removing BRTS,” Yadav said. BRTS corridor, a much-hyped project of former Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan government, was constructed from Misrod to Lal Ghati in Bhopal in 2009-10 at an estimated cost of Rs 360 crore under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission. The 24-km-long corridor will be removed in a phased manner, said the order. The plan to develop the route was also discussed.
