The Election Commission on Friday said that the schedule for elections to the Lok Sabha and some state Assemblies will be announced on Saturday.
Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar will address a press conference at 3pm on Saturday to announce the dates, the EC said. The term of the 17th Lok Sabha is set to end on June 16, while the terms of the Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Odisha and Sikkim Assemblies will end on June 11, June 2, June 24 and June 2, respectively.
With the announcement of poll dates, the Model Code of Conduct will come into effect that prohibits announcements of new schemes and use of government machinery during campaigning.
Last time, the ECI had announced the poll schedule on March 10, 2019, which included polling in seven phases from April 11 to May 19, and counting of votes on May 23, 2019.
Earlier on Thursday, the selection committee comprising Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah and Leader of the Congress in the Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury picked retired IAS officers Gyanesh Kumar and Sukhbir Singh Sandhu for two vacant posts of election commissioners. They were appointed by the President on Thursday evening and the new election commissioners joined office on Friday morning.
These appointments became the first ones to be done under the new law — the Chief Election Commissioner and Election Commissioners (Appointment, Conditions of Service and Term of Office) Act, 2023.
