Shiv Sena has said that it will not allow set up of the 9900 MW Jaitapur nuclear power project in Ratnagiri district of Maharashtra,if it amounts to suppressing the voice of the locals.

In a statement,Sena Executive President Uddhav Thackeray said if the nuclear plant amounts to devastation of livelihood of the local farmers, his party would oppose this “poisonous” project tooth and nail.

On Saturday, local residents, farmers and fisher folk of Jaitapur-Madban belt observed total bandh in protest against the proposed plant and took out a massive demonstration and the police tried to crush the agitation by resorting to lathi charge,he said.

Uddhav condemned police atrocities on the demonstrators.

“Sena will never tolerate such high-handedness to set up the project. We will support the people and stand by them,” he said.

“This project (Jaitapur) had once again proved that the government resorts to high handedness when dealing with poor people,” he said adding experts have said that the project will harm health of locals in the Konkan belt, destroy agriculture and pollute the drinking water too.

“Despite such grave issues,if the protest of the locals is crushed with police atrocities,Shiv Sena would stand by them in their opposition to the project,” Uddhav said.

The Sena leader also cited the example of Environment Ministry refusing permission for development of Koliwadas along the seashore saying that it would affect environment.
