Surendra Mohan,a former MP and an eminent socialist thinker known for his simplicity,died in Delhi on Friday.
Mohan,84,was a member of the Rajya Sabha from 1978 to 1984 elected on a Janata Party ticket.
A renowned socialist intellectual and activist,he was also a former chairman of the Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC).
Mohan is survived by his wife Manju,who was active in Janata Dal at the time when it was steered by the late V P Singh,a son and a daughter.
Union Minister S Jaipal Reddy,former minister Ram Vilas Paswan,veteran socialist Swami Agnivesh and eminent journalist Kuldip Nayyar were among those who attended the cremation.
Reddy described Mohan as one of the greatest socialist intellectual of the post-independent India and was a symbol of sacrifice and probity.
“I would call him the last Gandhian socialist,” he said.
