Union Minister Preneet Kaur said radio-tagging of Indian students in the United States was inhuman,unacceptable and unwarranted.

The Union government had taken up the matter with the US authorities very seriously,she told reporters.

“The Indian Ambassador to the US is already in touch the Obama administration and this (radio-collaring) will be removed very soon,” said the Minister of State for External Affairs.

All legal aid would be provided to those who face the prospect of deportation,she said adding “we have conveyed to the US authorities that the students must be treated fairly and reasonably”.

The use of radio monitors on a group of students was inhuman,unwarranted and unacceptable and these should be removed,Kaur said.

The students should be given an opportunity to present their case and those who wanted to return to India should be allowed to do so,the Minister said.

Indian students,mostly from Andhra Pradesh,are facing the prospect of deportation as US authorities last week shut down the Tri-Valley University in San Francisco on charges of a massive immigration fraud.

Some of the Indian students were forced to wear radio collars around their ankles to enable the US authorities to keep track of their movements electronically.
