The five-star hotel in the Pakistani capital that will host Home Minister P Chidambaram and Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao has been turned into a virtual fortress with heavy deployment of Army commandos and other security forces.
Hotel Serena in downtown Islamabad, which is also the venue for the SAARC Interior Ministers Meeting on June 26,has been placed under a tight security blanket.
Additional police personnel have been deployed at the entry points to the hotel.
Army commandos have been deployed within the hotel, along with other security forces, including personnel from Special Anti-terrorist Squad.
Rao,who arrived in Islamabad on Wednesday ahead of Thursday’s Foreign Secretary level talks, has already checked in the hotel.
The Indian delegation for the SAARC meeting is also staying here. Chidambaram will join them on June 25.
Since the suicide bombing at the Marriott hotel in September 2008,security had already been tightened at the Serena hotel.
Half the road in front of the hotel now remains closed to traffic,in line with security measures implemented in the aftermath of the Marriott bombing.
Barbed wires with barricades and concrete blocs can be seen at key sections of the road.
