Hope court verdict will settle issue of amnesty to Rajiv killers: CPI(M)

He says TN Assembly reflected the general opinion of people.

The CPI(M) on Wednesday said the issue of amnesty for Rajiv Gandhi’s killers was sub-judice and hoped the verdict would settle the matter.

Seeking to steer clear of the controversy created by Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s comments on Afzal Guru,CPI(M) leader Sitaram Yechury said “these are issues of concern. The Tamil Nadu Assembly has reflected the general opinion of the people in Tamil Nadu. What the Jammu and Kashmir chief minister has said is also an issue.”

Abdullah had said on Twitter that had the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly passed a resolution on Afzal Guru similar to the one passed by the Tamil Nadu Assembly seeking amnesty to the three killers of Gandhi who have been given capital punishment, would the reaction have been as muted as it is in this case.

“Now the matter is before the judiciary. So,let them adjudicate and I hope that the adjudication will be such that they will be able to settle all such problems,” Yechury said.

The Tamil Nadu High Court has stayed the hanging of the three convicts for eight weeks. The plea made on their behalf by eminent lawyer Ram Jethmalani was that they have already served 11 years in jail.
