(Source: Twitter/@kunalkamra88)Kunal Kamra row: Stand-up comic Kunal Kamra’s latest comedy special, Naya Bharat, has triggered a political backlash, leading to vandalism, legal threats, and the closure of The Habitat, a well-known comedy venue in Mumbai. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) also carried out a demolition drive at the venue, where Kamra filmed the special, which included a jab at Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde among others.
The controversy – far from the first with Kamra in the spotlight – broke after he seemed to use the term ‘gaddar‘, or ‘traitor’, to refer to Shinde, a former (undivided) Shiv Sena leader whose rebellion against party boss Uddhav Thackeray in 2022 caused a split and brought down the latter’s government. Shinde’s Sena faction then joined hands with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to form the government.
