The Kuki-Zo community on Thursday laid to rest 12 people killed during the recent flare-up in Jiribam district of ethnic strife-torn Manipur. These include 10 people killed in an alleged encounter with the Central Reserve Police Force.
The Indigenous Tribal Leaders’ Forum (ITLF), an influential group of the community, organised funerals at Lamka in Churachandpur district for the 12 Kuki-Zo tribals. Thousands of people, including from neighbouring Mizoram, attended the condolence service held at Peace Ground.
The ITLF said the tribe leaders who gathered at the condolence service called for a thorough investigation into the deaths of 10 “village volunteers” gunned down by CRPF personnel on November 11 as postmortem reports showed that they had been killed by bullets fired from behind.
The bodies of the 10 “village volunteers” were taken to their homes from a mortuary on Wednesday. All tribe leaders paid homage to the 12 people by covering their coffins with traditional shawls, honouring them as martyrs. They were laid to rest at the Martyrs Cemetery with a gun salute by “village volunteers”.
Along with a charter of demands, the ITLF submitted a memorandum addressed to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, through the Churachandpur deputy commissioner, highlighting the plight of the Kuki-Zo community. The demand includes a political solution (separate administration) for the Kuki-Zo community and a judicial inquiry into the killing of the 10 Kuki-Zos by the CRPF.
