The protest also included sit-in demonstrations at various hospitals and healthcare institutions across Manipur. (Express Photo)Doctors in Manipur joined the nationwide protest led by the Indian Medical Association (IMA) on Saturday condemning the rape and murder of a woman doctor at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata earlier this month.
The 24-hour nationwide doctors’ strike affected patient care services in the northeastern state, including at the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) and the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS).
The protest also included sit-in demonstrations at various hospitals and healthcare institutions across Manipur.
A student at Shija Hospitals expressed outrage over the Kolkata incident, labelling it a gross violation of individual and institutional integrity.
“It’s not just about the victim, but about every woman in India who faces such atrocities across different regions,” she said, adding that the incident highlighted the crucial role of women doctors and the imperative need to protect them.
Dr S Gautam, IMA Secretary, Manipur, emphasised that emergency services have been maintained during the strike. He, however, added that they may take more stringent measures if justice was not delivered in the Kolkata doctor rape-murder case.
