Two militants killed in separate encounters in J&K; Rajnath Singh visits Rajouri

Five Army personnel were killed Friday morning when militants cornered by the troops triggered an explosion in a densely forested area in Rajouri district of Jammu and Kashmir.

Two militants were killed in two separate encounters in Jammu and Kashmir’s Rajouri and Baramulla on Saturday. This comes a day after five Army personnel were killed in an explosion set off by terrorists in Rajouri.

According to Nagrota-based White Knight Corps, fresh firing ensued after a contact was established between the security forces and the militants in Kandi forest of Rajouri district in the wee hours of Saturday. “In the ongoing in the Kandi Forest in Rajouri sector, contact has been established with terrorists at 0115 hrs on 06 May 2023, and firing started,” said Army PRO Lt Colonel Devender Anand.

The White Knight Corps tweeted: “In the ongoing joint operation with @JmuKmrPolice & CRPF , at approx 0700 hours the cordon while closing in spotted & pinned down the terrorists. In the ensuing gunbattle 1 terrorist has been neutralised & 1 more is likely to be injured.”

Among the ammunitions seized were an AK-56, four magazines of AK, 56 rounds of AK, a 9-mm pistol with magazine, three grenades and an ammunition pouch.

Northern Army Commander Lt General Upendra Dwivedi also reached “Ground Zero” and “is reviewing the operational situation on the ongoing operations at Kandi in Rajouri district where a contact was re-established with the terrorists”, an Army statement said. He was briefed on all aspects of the operations by ground commanders, it added. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh too visited for Jammu to take stock of the situation.

On Friday, White Knight Corps had said in a tweet that a joint operation “Op Trinetra” has been launched to flush out terrorists who attacked an army truck near Bhatta Durian area in Poonch district killing five soldiers on April 20.

Meanwhile, Kashmir Zone Police said another terrorist was killed in an encounter that broke out in the Karhama Kunzer area of Baramulla. The militant has been identified as Abid Wani with linked with banned terror outfit lashkar-e-Taiba. “Killed #terrorist identified as Abid Wani S/O Mohd Rafiq Wani R/O Yarhol Babapora Kulgam, linked with proscribed #terror outfit LeT. Incriminating materials, 01 AK 47 rifle recovered,” Kashmir Zone Police tweeted.

Talking to news agency ANI, Baramulla SSP Amod Ashok Nagpure said: “Information was received about some suspicious movement. A cordon and search operation was launched and during that firing was done towards us and in retaliatory firing one terrorist of LeT has been killed. Our forces are alert in view of G20 Summit and we are neutralising the threat & G20 Summit will be organised successfully.”

An officer was also injured in the explosion caused by an Improvised Explosive Device (IED), said officials. Senior security and police officers reached the spot and an operation to flush out the militants was underway till late night. The Army’s elite special forces were also involved in the operation, sources in New Delhi told The Indian Express.

Multiple search parties were launched in the area on May 3 following specific inputs about the presence of militants in the area.
