Jammu and Kashmir’s Chief Electoral Officer Shaleen Kabra said Monday appropriate security measures have been taken for the upcoming Panchayat polls, a day ahead of the first notification for the first phase of the elections.
Addressing a press conference here, Kabra said the elections will be held between November 17 and December 11, in nine phases. “We have taking appropriate measures to reassure the people about the security arrangements for the Panchayat polls,” he said.
Kabra said there are 316 blocks, 4,483 panchayat halqas, and 35,029 Panch constituencies, and the total number of voters registered for the elections is 58,54,208.
The elections process for Panchayat polls will be completed by December 17, he said.
The term of the last panchayat bodies ended in July 2016. The outbreak of violence that month over the killing of Hizbul Mujahideen militant Burhan Wani led to the elections being delayed.
Asked about journalists in the Valley not being allowed to enter polling booths during the municipal polls, Kabra said, “There is a process by which somebody is accredited, and once that card (pass) is issued, then the person can enter the polling station premises. But please do realise that we don’t want the voter to get uncomfortable…”
On the vacant wards in the municipal bodies, Kabra said that it would require the fresh notification and polling.
