Japan’s Shinkansen E-10 trains to run on Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet train corridor

Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train Project: The Ministry of Railways is planning to introduce Japanese Shinkansen E-10 trains on India’s first bullet train corridor between Mumbai and Ahmedabad. Presently, the construction work on the 508-km-long Mumbai–Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (MAHSR) project is progressing at a rapid pace.

The Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet train will pass through – Gujarat, Maharashtra and the Union Territory of Dadra & Nagar Haveli.

Mumbai Ahmedabad Bullet Train Stations

The Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project will have 12 stations namely – Mumbai, Thane, Virar, Boisar, Vapi, Billimora, Surat, Bharuch, Vadodara, Anand, Ahmedabad and Sabarmati.

Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train Update

During his visit to Mumbai on Saturday, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw confirmed that, as per decisions taken by the governments of India and Japan, the world’s latest Shinkansen E-10 trains will be imported to India for operation on the Mumbai–Ahmedabad bullet train corridor.

On Friday, Vaishnaw held a high-level meeting with a Japanese delegation to review the project’s progress, where the team expressed satisfaction with the ongoing work.

Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train Speed

The Japanese Shinkansen E-10 trains will operate at a maximum speed of 350 kmph, with an average speed of 321 kmph. This will enable the Mumbai–Ahmedabad journey to be completed in just 2 hours and 7 minutes.

Mumbai-Ahmedabad Vande Bharat

The Railway Minister also clarified that Vande Bharat trains will not run on the MAHSR corridor, as bullet trains and Vande Bharat operate on two entirely different platforms.

Mumbai Ahmedabad Bullet Train Project Cost

The total estimated cost of MAHSR project is Rs 1,08,000 crore (approximately). Of these, Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) is funding 81% of the project cost i.e. Rs. 88,000 crores. Balance 19% cost i.e. Rs. 20,000 crores will be funded through equity contribution from Ministry of Railways (50%) and State Governments of Maharashtra (25%) and Gujarat (25%). Till June 30, 2025, the Cumulative Financial expenditure of Rs. 78,839/- crore has been incurred on the project.
