Jammu: Nine people trapped in Tawi rescued

Among the rescued was a 52-year-old-labourer, who had gone to extract sand from the river bed. Eight others, including those who had gone to perform religious rituals for their deceased ancestors.

Nine people who got trapped in Tawi river due to a sudden rise in its water level, were rescued in a joint operation by the J&K Police and the State Disaster Response Force Thursday.

Among the rescued was a 52-year-old-labourer, who had gone to extract sand from the river bed. Eight others, including those who had gone to perform religious rituals for their deceased ancestors.

The traffic along the Jammu-Srinagar highway also got disrupted for nearly three hours after mudslides triggered by heavy rain blocked the road at Mehad and T2 tunnel in Ramban. Traffic was restored after road clearance agencies removed the blockades.

Jammu province is likely to have light to moderate rain at many places, officials said, adding there is also a possibility of heavy rain at a few places till Friday.
