J-K police pick up 2 Kashmiri doctors from Uttar Pradesh, ‘seize’ rifle from Anantnag hospital locker

While police have not officially commented on the recovery of the rifle and the detention of the doctors, sources said the doctors’ names came up during an investigation into the appearance of posters supporting Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) and while going through CCTV footage.

According to sources, police have registered a case under section 7/25 of the Arms Act and several sections of the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA).

Officers in Jammu and Kashmir said police have seized a rifle from a locker reserved for doctors in the Government Medical College (GMC) in Anantnag.

This came after police detained two Kashmiri doctors who were posted at GMC Anantnag last year. They were detained from Saharanpur and Allahabad in Uttar Pradesh.

According to officials, police have registered a case under section 7/25 of the Arms Act and several sections of the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA).

While police have not officially commented on the recovery of the rifle and the detention of the doctors, officials said the doctors’ names came up during an investigation into the appearance of posters supporting Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) and while going through CCTV footage.

They say that one of the doctors was posted as a senior resident at GMC Anantnag in October 2024 and was working at a private hospital in Uttar Pradesh’s Saharanpur when he was detained. A local court in Saharanpur has granted his transit remand.

Officials said the rifle was recovered from the hospital premises on the information provided by the doctors, and the police are looking for a third doctor. They did not say why the doctor’s locker remained locked, even though he had left the hospital a year ago.
