(Express Archive Photo)India observes the 106th anniversary of the Jallianwala Bagh massacre, a turning point in India’s struggle for independence, on Sunday. Heartfelt tributes poured in from political leaders from across party lines with President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi leading with paying homage to the martyrs.
Exactly 106 years ago, on April 13, 1919, hundreds of unarmed civilians, including women and children had gathered on account of the annual Baisakhi fair at Amritsar’s Jallianwala Bagh. Brigadier-General Reginald Dyer ordered his troops to open fire on this large gathering which had gathered to peacefully protest against the Rowlatt Act, which granted the colonial administration repressive powers.
While the British official report stated that 379 people were killed in the incident, some estimates put the death toll in the thousands.
Paying tribute to the freedom fighters who laid down their lives at Jallianwala Bagh, President Droupadi Murmu said, “Their sacrifice made the flow of our freedom struggle stronger. Grateful India will always remain indebted to them.”

Calling it “a dark chapter in our nation’s history”, Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to the victims of the massacre which killed over a thousand innocent Indians.
PM Modi took to X and wrote: “We pay homage to the martyrs of Jallianwala Bagh. The coming generations will always remember their indomitable spirit.”
“It was indeed a dark chapter in our nation’s history. Their sacrifice became a major turning point in India’s freedom struggle,” he added.

Calling the massacre is a symbol of the cruelty of an unjust regime, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said the country can never forget the Jallianwala Bagh tragedy. “The sacrifice of our brave martyrs against this injustice and tyranny will continue to inspire future generations to fight against injustice,” he wrote in his tribute to the martyrs on X.

Echoing similar sentiments, Amit Shah called it a ‘dark chapter’ in India’s freedom struggle and said the nation will always remember the immortal martyrs of Jallianwala Bagh.
In a post on X, Shah paid heartfelt tribute: “The Jallianwala Bagh massacre is a dark chapter in India’s freedom struggle that shook the entire nation. The outrage it sparked among our people, in response to the cruelty of British rule at its most inhumane, transformed the freedom movement into a mass uprising.”
“I pay my tribute to the martyrs of Jallianwala Bagh. The country will always cherish their memory,” he added.

Calling Jallianwala Bagh a ‘sacred pilgrimage for all patriots’, UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said the brave sons of the motherland who sacrificed their lives while resisting the barbarity of the British rule will always be remembered.
“Jallianwala Bagh is a sacred pilgrimage for all patriots, where the brave sons of the motherland sacrificed their lives while resisting the barbarity of the British rule,” said Yogi in a post on X.
The sacrifice of the immortal revolutionaries of Jallianwala Bagh is the immortal saga of the self-respect and freedom of the nation, which will always inspire,” he added.

Karnataka Congress President DK Shivakumar also paid tribute to martyrs of Jallianwala Bagh massacre. In a post on X, he said, “Paying tribute to the innocent lives lost in the #JallianwalaBaghMassacre on this day in 1919. Their sacrifice ignited a flame of resistance that shaped India’s struggle for freedom. The nation will always remember their sacrifice!”
