An SUV allegedly plowed through a busy street in Jaipur on Monday night, killing three people and injuring at least six others.
According to police, around 10 pm, Usmaan Khan (62), a factory owner and a Congress leader, was driving his vehicle in the Walled City area, the lanes of which are typically congested. Police are probing if he was under the influence of alcohol.
The incident took place under the jurisdiction of the Nahargarh police station. SHO Rameshwari said, “The driver was caught while trying to escape… We detained him and conducted a medical examination. An investigation is underway and we will take action accordingly.”

Around 10.30 am on Tuesday, the BJP MLA from Hawa Mahal, Balmukund Acharya, and his supporters started a protest in front of the police station, demanding compensation for the deceased’s family members. Police forces were called from different stations to control the situation.
Police said that the accused hit several vehicles, including two-wheelers, over a 500-metre distance. The driver first allegedly hit a scooter near Santoshi Mata temple and then fled as people could be seen writhing on the ground. He also allegedly hit vehicles parked outside the police station.
The deceased were identified as Virendra Singh (48) and Mamta Kanwar (50), residents of Shastri Nagar, and Awadhesh Pareek (37), a resident of Laldas Ka Khada. Kanwar’s father has filed an FIR against the accused.
Police said Khan runs a factory where iron beds are made.
