Several people, including some policemen, were injured after a clash between workers of the ruling Telugu Desam Party and the rival Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP) in Podili in Andhra Pradesh’s Prakasam district during Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy’s visit on Wednesday afternoon.

Police said that the clash erupted after TDP supporters held up placards that read ‘Jagan Go back’ and taunted YSRCP workers, resulting in scuffles.

“There was heavy stone pelting from both sides, and several people, including policemen on duty, were injured,” a police officer from Podili police station said.

Several people, including women, also allegedly attacked the convoy of the former CM with sticks and stones as he was leaving town.

Jagan visited Podili to meet tobacco farmers, who he claimed are facing hardships. He arrived at 10 am on Wednesday and visited the tobacco board to hold a direct interaction with the farmers. After the meeting, he claimed that the lack of a minimum support price for their tobacco produce was “immensely” affecting farmers.

A massive crowd had gathered to welcome him, with farmers and locals lining the roads as he made his way to the centre. According to police sources, as he was leaving the area, dozens of TDP cadres showed up and shouted slogans, eventually clashing with YSRCP supporters and leading to stone pelting.

The clash between the two parties caused panic as people began to run to escape the barrage of stones and sticks.
