Yakub Memon is the only one sentenced to death for the Mumbai 1993 serial blasts as the Supreme Court in March 2013 commuted the sentences of 10 others to life.

“Although he was not directly involved in planting the bombs, he stood behind from starting till the end, viz. conspiracy, planning, handling money transactions, monitoring the activities and making all the arrangements for sending certain persons to Pakistan for training in handling of arms and ammunition,” the court had ruled.

“Both (Yakub and Tiger Memon) owe an equivalent responsibility for the blasts. They were the architects of the blasts, without whom the plan would have never seen daylight. From this conduct, it is not hyperbole to state that he was one of the ‘driving spirits’ behind the plan of the 1993 blasts, whereas the other appellants played a far lesser role and thus a lesser contribution to the crimes resulting from this plan,” it had held.

The court said but for Yakub’s dominant role in the conspiracy, the explosives and ammunition would not have entered the country.
