Withdrew case against 31 RSS men on humanitarian grounds: Chandy

Chandy said T R Adarsh, one of the alleged accused in the case, had petitioned him to withdraw the case as it became a hurdle for his career.

Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy on Friday said the attempt to murder case against 31 RSS workers was withdrawn last year on humanitarian grounds after one of the alleged accused petitioned before him.

The government’s decision to revoke the case pertaining to campus violence, in which a police officer was brutally attacked, had come under fire from various quarters. The CPM had alleged that the decision taken last year exposed the nexus between the Congress and the Sangh Parivar in Kerala. The attempt to murder case was registered in 2005 against 31 RSS workers after they attacked and hurled bombs at police inspector Mohan Nair, who tried to contain campus violence in the state capital. The case was withdrawn after the chargesheet was filed in court.

Chandy said T R Adarsh, one of the alleged accused in the case, had petitioned him to withdraw the case as it became a hurdle for his career. A student at that time, Adarsh got selected in the police as a constable in 2012. He could not join the force as a criminal case was lodged against him, which is why he petitioned the CM.

Adarsh was innocent as he had been away from the campus for six months after an accident. On the day of the incident, he had returned and was unable to run when police cracked down. The CM’s office said as the case against one person couldn’t be withdrawn when 31 others were also accused, the decision was made binding to all.
