Business establishments and shops reopened in the valley on Tuesday after eight days of shut-down in protest against the killing of two teenaged boys, coupled with imposition of restrictions by the authorities.
Normalcy returned following appeals by both factions of the Hurriyat Conference to withdraw from protests. Government offices, banks, courts and private offices also were reopened.
Chairmen of Hurriyat factions Syed Ali Shah Geelani and Mirwaiz Umer Farooq appealed to people not to observe strike and resume normal life as strike had seriously affected the public for the past one week.
Life was thrown out of gear in the valley for eight days following the death of Wamik Farooq (13),a class VII student,in a teargas shell fired allegedly by an assistant sub-inspector of police on January 31.
The situation worsened after a second teenager Zahid Farooq Shah (16) was shot dead allegedly by security forces at Brain-Nishat on the banks of Dal Lake on February 5.
Fearing trouble, authorities had imposed restrictions on the movement of people on February four which continued till Monday, when the moderate Hurriyat Conference had planned to take out a procession to local UN office of military observers for India and Pakistan.
