Two engineering students from Karunya University in Coimbatore were drowned in Siruvani check dam on Saturday. The victims, Jean Mathew Varghese (Pathanamthitta) and Jacob Chacko (Ernakulam), were among the five students, who came to take bath in the reservoir on Saturday.

In another incident, five youths who have ventured into the famed Kovalam beach for bathing have gone missing since Saturday night. While the body of one person was fished out, search is going to trace four others.

Coastal police at Vizhinjam said the body of Anoop, 21, a native of Varkala, was retrieved by rescue operators and coastal police on Saturday midnight. He was a Hotel management student in Bangalore. The four others are still missing despite extensive search held on Sunday under the leadership of Coast Guard.

Police identified the other four missing persons as Jithin Raj, Nidhin, (both engineering college students) basketball coach Abhishek, and medical college student Akhil. They had ventured into the choppy sea at 7 pm on Saturday disregarding the warning issued by the life guards on duty at the beach. Soon they got trapped in the strong waves and were washed away. The rescue operations had been suspended in the late night due to heavy rains.
