Two Bangladeshis held while smuggling truck-load coal from Meghalaya

Border Security Force (BSF) troops deployed in the India-Bangladesh border in Meghalaya have apprehended two Bangladeshi nationals along with a truck-load of coal in South Garo Hills district along with fake documents including voter identity cards, a BSF press release said on Wednesday.

The duo – Nur Mohammed (29) and Md Salman (27) – both residents of village Barsora under Tahirpur police in Sunamganj district of Bangladesh were taking the truck towards towards the international boundary on Tuesday night for onward dispatch to the other country, the BSF press release said. While Nur Mohammed was allegedly engaged as a truck driver by a Shillong-based export company for nearly three weeks, Md Salman was working as working as his helper.

During frisking, the BSF troops recovered from Mohammed photocopy of an Indian driving licence and voter identity card issued in the name of one Rovi Hajong of Ranikor in West Khasi Hills district, apart from Rs 3,500 Indian currency and a mobile phone with a Bangladesh SIM card, the BSF said. It was suspected that the duo were on their way to the border where they would have tried to dispatch the coal to Bangladesh by boats.

BSF troops have in the past two weeks also seized 13 boats, 50 tons of coal, 147 cows, 77 CFT wooden log and 1283 bottles of liquor while they were being smuggled out to Bangladesh through Meghalaya. The total value of the items is estimated to be about RS 48 lakhs.

With the early monsoon rains already increasing the water level of rivers that flow out from Meghalaya to Bangladesh, smugglers have started diverting their illegal activities though the river routes, the BSF said. Meghalaya shares 443 kms of intenational boundary with Bangladesh, portions of which are vulnerable especially because of difficult terrain.
