STICKLER FOR CONVENTION
Last year, former Chief Justice of India P Sathasivam got to know about he being designated as the CJI when he received information from Rashtrapati Bhavan. This was surprising since normally, the outgoing CJI — Altamas Kabir in his case — breaks the news to his successor. Moreover, Kabir waited till the last minute to recommend — a mere formality — Sathasivam’s name for the top post. This time, however, things were different. Not only did Sathasivam send his recommendation in advance, he even called up Law Minister Kapil Sibal, who was busy with his campaign, to speed up things. He also personally went to his successor R M Lodha’s chambers in the Supreme Court to inform him that he had recommended his name for the post.
A SECY TOO MANY
For the fifth time in less than two years, the Ministry of Women and Child Development will have a new secretary next month after incumbent A K Jain retires at the end of this month. The post has had a particularly stormy run ever since Neela Gangadahrana retired in May 2012. The next secretary, Prem Narain, had to leave because of health reasons and his successor Nita Chaudhry was transferred after minister Krishna Tirath was inundated with complaints against her working style. The twist in the tale is that there is some speculation in the corridors of power about Chaudhry being given additional charge.
PUTTING ON RECORD
The first list of cases released after Justice R M Lodha took over as the new Chief Justice of India sent out a message loud and clear. The list mentions at the top that it will be appreciated if the advocates on record do not seek adjournment in cases listed on April 28 across all the courts. The message has drawn mixed reactions from the lawyers, who have heard this from judges earlier, too, but had not seen the writing on the wall so clearly.
COLLISION COURSE
In what may lead to fresh confrontation between the CBI and the CVC, the latter is learnt to have called a meeting on April 28 for the selection of the special director in the CBI. The post had fallen vacant after the retirement of K Saleem Ali last year. A tussle was noticed between the CVC and the CBI over the selection of Archana Ramasundaram as additional director who was being backed by the CBI while the CVC and the Home Secretary wanted to bring another candidate. Ramasundaram however was finally appointed as the additional director but is yet to join the agency.
PRICE OF POLITICS
Around 300 contractual workers at the NDMC who were serving with the Home Ministry has been rendered jobless after they earned the wrath of Union Home Secretary Anil Goswami. The contractual employees serving at NDCC building were seen leaning to the Aam Aadmi Party and also held meeting with party chief Arvind Kejriwal ahead of the Delhi Assembly election. Kejriwal had promised them that their job at the NDMC will be regularised. many of these workers are said to have voted in favour of the AAP. This has also led to complaints from the babus at the ministry of staff shortage.
