The father of a 12-year-old girl, who was allegedly beaten up by Punjab BJP Mahila Morcha president Renu Thapar,on Sunday claimed he had sent his daughter to Thapar to get educated and not work as a domestic help.

“I don’t know whether she was working as a domestic help. I had sent her there to study,” he said, adding that he had brought the girl to Jalandhar on June 11 this year. She later returned to Ludhiana. When asked why he had sent his daughter to Thapar’s place for studying,he refused to comment.

However,in her statement before a local court, the girl had claimed that she was working as domestic help at Thapar’s house, where she the BJP leader, her husband and son used to beat her up. Twice she fled from the house, but her father handed her over to Thapar again, she added.

She even refused to stay with her parents and was thus sent to the Nari Niketan here. The girl also told the police that she was working as domestic help for the last three years at Thapar’s residence.

SHO Rajinder Sharma of police division 5 said,“The father said he had sent the girl to Renu Thapar’s house to study and not work as a domestic help… As she told the magistrate that she will neither stay with her parents nor with Renu Thapar, the only option was to keep her at Nari Niketan.”

When contacted,ACP

R P S Sandu said that the statements of the girl’s parents have been forwarded to the Ludhiana police.

Meanwhile,ASI Malkit Singh has been suspended on Saturday for recording the girl’s statement in uniform in the absence of a woman police officer at 11.30 pm on Friday. Later,ASI Parminder Kaur (in uniform) recorded her statement again. The criminal procedure code bars a woman being taken to police station after sunset. Juvenile Justice (care and protection of children) Act states that a police officer should always be in plain clothes while dealing with children.

Days after a 12-year-old girl, who claimed to be working

as a domestic help at the residence of BJP Mahila Morcha president in Ludhiana, accused her employer of physically torturing her for over two years, the Punjab Congress

on Sunday demanded that Renu Thapar be removed from her post.

The issue came to light on Friday, after a shopkeeper in Jalandhar found the girl crying and approached area councillor Sushil Rinku for help, who in turn informed the police.

In her statement before a Jalandhar court, the girl had said that she escaped from Thapar’s house on Friday evening to reach Jalandhar, where her parents lived. The court sent the girl to Nari Niketan here after she refused to live with her parents.

Slamming that state home department headed

Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal,Punjab

Congress Spokesperson Nimisha Mehta said: “Does the SAD government and the home department think that a poor 12-year-old child is big enough to fight her case in an area where she has no guardian or parents to look

after her?”

“On one hand, the chief minister and his daughter-in-law Harsimrat Kaur Badal are often seen making tall claims about protecting the girl child. On the other, his own son does not give a hoot about his father and wife. Either the

CM has lost control over his son,who doesn’t listen to him,or the claims are a mere eyewash to fool innocent people,” she added.

Demanding that Thapar be immediately removed,Mehta said: “The BJP shying away from giving any statement on the matter indicates that the party does not object to child labour or abuse… Renu Thapar must be booked under child labour laws.”
