In the fifth such accident this year,a 12-year-old boy died after being crushed by his school bus in Andheri (West) on Wednesday afternoon.
The D N Nagar police have arrested the driver for causing death due to negligence.
Police said Hamza Siddiqui Tayyani was a Class VII student at Barfiwala School near Indian Oil Colony in Andheri (West) and lived at Inlight Apartments in Jogeshwari (West). The incident occurred around 3.30 pm when Tayyani was getting into the school bus to return home.
Officers said after school ended,Tayyani had rushed towards the school bus when he was pushed by another student and fell down. As he was getting up,the bus started and his bag got caught in the rear wheel, said the police. Before the boy could pull his bag,the bus had dragged him for a few metres and his limbs had got crushed under the rear wheel, said Assistant Police Inspector S Gavade from the D N Nagar police station.
The students who saw the incident informed the school management, which called up the boys parents and the local police station.
Police said Tayyani was rushed to a nearby hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. We have registered a case of death due to negligence against the driver, said Gavade.
The driver has been identified as Deepak Gurav (30),who was working for the school for the past five years.
Bhaskar Raut,a parent of a kid studying in the same school, said: The attendants of the buses dont do their work properly. While they are supposed to take care of the kids when they are getting off or boarding the buses, they prefer chatting with their colleagues. The school should have taken cognisance of this.
Raut was among the parents who rushed to the school after the accident to protest against the negligence.
