Saradha Group chit fund ‘kingpin’ Sudipta Sen arrested in J-K

Debjani Mukherjee,Arvind Singh Chauhan were also detained in the Sonmarg area of J-K.

Sudipta Sen,managing director of the Saradha Group and alleged kingpin of Bengal’s rapidly unfolding chit fund scam,was detained at a hotel in the tourist town of Sonmarg on the Srinagar-Leh highway on Tuesday morning.

Two other individuals — a man identified as Arvind Singh,and a woman called Debjani Mukherjee,who is believed to be a director of the group — were taken into custody too,police said.

“He (Sen) was detained at Sonmarg based on an input from Kolkata Police,” DIG Kashmir Ahfad-ul-Mujtaba told The Indian Express. “Two more persons have been detained with him.”

Sen — whose arrest West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee ordered over the weekend — had checked into Sonmarg’s Hotel Snowland along with his associates on Monday evening. A senior J&K Police officer said a team of the West Bengal Police was on its way to Kashmir to formally arrest the trio.

In Kolkata,Bidhannagar Police commissioner Rajeev Kumar told PTI,“Three persons have been detained in Sonmarg area of Jammu and Kashmir. The police there have identified them as Sudipta Sen,Debjani Mukherjee and Arvind Singh Chauhan.”

Kumar said a Mahindra Scorpio with a West Bengal registration plate too had been seized.
