In yet another set back for “encounter specialist” retired Deputy Superintendent of Police (DySP) Tarun Barot the Gujarat High Court on Thursday rejected his regular bail application in connection with 2003 Sadiq Jamal Mehtar encounter case. His similar petition had been rejected by a special CBI court earlier this month.
Barot has been behind the bars since his arrest in the case by the CBI more than two years back. He is lodged at Nadia sub-jail. Barot had cited delay in the further investigation in the case, besides his personal credential and health grounds.
In the CBI chargesheet Barot is accused of bringing Sadiq from Mumbai illegally days before the encounter. Along with Barot seven others were chargesheeted by the CBI in December 2012, out of who two accused- RL Mavani and KM Vaghela-were recently granted regular bail by the CBI court.
Sadiq was a resident of Bhavnagar who was killed near Galaxy cinema, Naroda in the outskirt of Ahmedabad on January 13, 2003. He was branded as a member of Lashkar-e-Toiba who wanted to kill the then chief minister Narendra Modi, now the prime minister and other BJP leaders.
