Punjab polls: Candidates promise liquor,money,drugs

Candidates have been playing smart despite the watchful;l eye of the CEC.

If the Chief Election Commissioner of India (CEC) has been keeping a close watch on party candidates when it comes to their election expenditure, the candidates have also been playing smart — most of them have promised free liquor, drugs and money to their supporters after the elections. Now,with model code of conduct still in force in the state, these leaders have asked their supporters to wait till March 9,when the code will be lifted.

“Our supporters have had tirelessly supported us during election time. It is our duty to pay them back but we could not do so till date due to the CEC keeping a close watch,” said a confidant of a candidate in Jalandhar.

“Earlier,we had thought that we could make them (supporters) happy after polling day. But it was not possible this time as the CEC has not spared anyone,” said a candidate.

In the run-up to the elections, almost all parties had hired young unemployed youth to support their candidates in the polls. “The wait was killing. Earlier,we used to get our dues on the same day. But this time,it has been over a month. We still have to wait for few more days to get the promised dues,” said a young supporter of a SAD candidate.

Another supporter of a candidate in Shahkot said: “In the previous elections as well, such things were not distributed openly. But we used to get these during the night after campaigning. This time,it has been a long wait.

Asked whether they were sure to get their due even if a candidate lost the election,a supporter said: “We are dead sure that we will get what we have been promised.”
