The Delhi High Court has recently asked Punjab Technical University (PTU) to file a reply before May 1 in connection with admissions made by it in its distance education programmes.
Earlier,in its January 16 order, the court had directed PTU not to admit any more students without approval from the Distance Education Council (DEC). However,a communication by PTU registrar dated March 11 shows that despite the courts order, the university had admitted students at its learning centres (LCs).
Following this, petitioners Tilak SIngh and Deepak Negi brought the matter in the notice of the Delhi High Court, which on March 12 asked PTU to file its reply by May 1.
The counsel appearing for PTU has submitted the DEC has no power to recognise any admission and thus, the university is not required to obtain any approval from it. The court, however, stated that neither the LCs will admit any students nor PTU will recognise such admissions. For better appreciation and adjudication of the issue involved in these petitions, both UGC and AICTE are required to be heard, the court said.
Despite repeated attempts,PTU authorities were not available for comments.
