As many as 3,59,964 persons were killed and over 14.50 lakh accidents were reported on the Indian roads in 2007-2009,the Rajya Sabha was informed today.
Of this,1,25,660 fatalities on the roads were reported in 2009,a rise of 4.84 per cent over the previous year,Minister of State for Road Transport Tushar Chaudhary said in a written reply.
In 2008,1,19,860 deaths were reported on the roads across the country,while in 2007 as many as 1,14,444 fatalities were reported,he said.
The Minister of State for Road Transport further said that in 2009,largest number of fatalities were reported in Arunachal Pradesh at 14,770,closely followed by Uttar Pradesh at 14,638.
Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra were next in line with 13,746 and 11,396 cases of deaths,respectively,Chaudhary added.
Citing the latest data,the Minister further said that number of road accidents in the country rose marginally in 2009 at 4,86,384 vis-a-vis 4,84,704 cases of 2008.
Talking about the accidents on the National Highways,Chaudhary said 4,19,428 cases were reported between 2007 and 2009 on different national highways across the country,in which 1,28,504 persons were killed.
Of this,1,42,511 cases of road accidents and 45,222 fatalities were reported in 2009,he said.
“The number of road accidents on National Highways through out the country decreased marginally for the years 2007 and 2008 but again increased during the year 2009,” the Minister of State for Road Transport added.
Replying to a separate query,Chaudhary said that highest number of fatalities in road accidents in the world in 2008 were reported by India,with 1,19,860 dying in road accidents.
He was quoting World Road Statistics,2010 of International Road Federation,Geneva,which said that after India,largest number of fatalities were reported by China,followed by the United States of America.
