Congress spokesperson noted that the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library (NMML) stands testimony to and symbolises national struggle against colonial rule as also our evolution as a sovereign, democratic and secular nation in the years following Independence.
At a time when th government is planning an overhaul of 39 institutions, including the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library, with an aim to introduce a “modern component”, the Congress has slammed the move and termed it “diabolical”.
Union Culture Minister Mahesh Sharma said the overhaul will ensure that the Nehru Memorial, located at Teen Murti Bhavan, showcases various personalities and movements of India and not just the history of “one person”.
“The constitution of Nehru Memorial clearly states that it should work to preserve and showcase eminent personalities and movements of modern India and not just one person. We are now developing it in a way that the institution is true to its own constitution which states the purpose with which it was established. That means everything important to India’s history, from the British period to the modern times, will be preserved and showcased,” Sharma said.
