A year after a Delhi girl was allegedly abducted from BPS Mahila Vishwavidyalaya at Sonepat and gangraped by four youth,a Sirsa court Friday awarded the prime accused in the case with a sentence of 10 years rigorous imprisonment and slapped on him a fine of Rs 5,000 fine. The youth will have to remain in jail for another two years if he fails to pay the fine.
The court, which acquitted the other three accused in the case due to lack of evidence, also convicted Amit on charges of kidnapping and awarded him four years rigorous imprisonment and Rs 2,000 fine. Both the sentences will run concurrently.
Earlier, the four youth,Amit and his three friends including Jaipal,Bhupender and Vinod, were booked by the Haryana Police after the 18-year-old girl alleged that she was abducted on May 18 last year from outside the university campus, while she was on her way to purchase some stationery from the market.
The victim alleged that she was raped by Amit and his three friends and later dumped outside the campus. The prime accused,Amit, used to run the hostel mess on the university campus. Based on the girls complaint, the police had registered a case on charges of gangrape against all the four accused and arrested them.
When the incident came to light, the students at the university had staged a series of protests against the district administration and state police and resorted to a day long strike on the campus. The issue had even rocked the Haryana Assembly and the Education Minister Geeta Bhukkal had later ordered an inquiry into it.
