Kerala cops dampen third ‘Kiss of Love’

Hundreds of onlookers had thronged the Alappuzha beach to witness protest named “kiss against fascism’’.

The third edition of “Kiss of Love” was held in a subdued manner at Alappuzha on Sunday evening after police took many activists into custody and outfits led by the Shiv Sena and the VHP held a protest march against the event.

Hundreds of onlookers had thronged the Alappuzha beach to witness the protest named “kiss against fascism’’.

This was the third such protest in the last two months. A strong police contingent kept vigil and public entry to the beach was restricted. When activists moved to the beach, 41 of them were taken into custody and moved to a police station outside the city. However, at the same time, 10-odd people in another part of the city took part in the “kiss against fascism”.

Criticising the police action, they said the government has taken away a citizen’s right to protest peacefully. It was against the spirit of democracy to arrest those taking part in the peaceful “kiss against fascism” protest, they added.
