Continuing with their engagement in the defence and security arena, India and China have decided to hold a joint Army exercise here this year and have agreed on several measures like increasing maritime security cooperation and enhancing exchange of officers at senior levels, including a meeting of the Director General of Military Operations from both sides.
The sixth annual defence dialogue, that was held in the Capital Monday, focused on enhancing trust levels on the border and increasing interactions at several levels of the armies that guard the border. Among the measures discussed were plans to increase border meeting points to ensure regular communication.
As part of the planned engagement, a joint Army exercise is to take place this year.
“Both sides took note of the successful conduct of the joint Army exercise in China in 2013 and agreed to conduct the next joint Army exercise in India in 2014,” a statement issued by the Defence Ministry after the talks said.
During the meeting, co-chaired by Defence Secretary R K Mathur and Deputy Chief of General Staff of the PLA Lt Gen Wang Guanzhong, the two sides also exchanged views on the “security situation in South Asia, the Asia-Pacific and the Indian Ocean region”.
Noting that 2014 has been designated as the ‘Year of Friendly Exchanges’ both sides have also agreed to expand the exchanges between the armed forces and India has welcomed the proposed visit of China’s Minister of National Defence to India this year.
As decided earlier, a senior level exchange between the Directorates General of Military Operations would be conducted in India in 2014, during which “both sides would discuss practical measures for management of border issues”.
