J-K government to set up task force for water management

Task Force would establish mechanism for receiving regular reports about all water management related issues.

In order to ascertain effective utilisation of water so that it could cater to multiple demands efficaciously in Jammu and Kashmir,state government has announced to set up a multi-disciplinary Empowered Task Force,an official spokesman said.

The decision was announced by Governor N N Vohra and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah while addressing the sixth meeting of University Council of the Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology (SKUAST),Jammu,at Raj Bhavan here,the spokesman said.

“Task Force would establish a mechanism for receiving regular reports about all water management related issues and based on valid data of ground water and other water sources draw up a well considered approach to the utilisation of resources for irrigation,human,animal,industrial and various other requirements in the short and wider term,” the spokesman said.

The Chief Minister,who is also the pro-chancellor of the University,highlighted the importance of agriculture and allied sectors in the economy of the state and said the agricultural universities have to play a specific role for securing increase in farm productivity and production by incorporating new techniques. He said the council also approved that the stipend paid to accounts assistants and field-cum-laboratory assistants of the University would be increased from Rs 500 to Rs 3,000 and Rs 600 to Rs 3,500 per month,respectively.
