Home Minister Rajnath Singh.
Even as Army veterans continue to keep the embers of One Rank One Pension (OROP) simmering, Home Minister Rajnath Singh had to field similar demands from paramilitary forces during his first visit to the Sino-Indian border in Ladakh.
As the home minister freely interacted with ITBP personnel, they argued why the Army, with whom they fight shoulder to shoulder, should get OROP, while are denied even their pension.
Singh, who made a 400-km long journey from Leh by road and spent Tuesday night at Dungti border outpost (BoP), also noted lack of road connectivity and communication in the area and the hardships faced by jawans manning such high-altitude BoPs.
Sources said the minister has identified three roads — DBO Track Junction to Siachen, Chushul to Loma and Dhemchok — that need to be repaired and extended on priority basis.
Sources said ITBP personnel requested the minister for better healthcare facilities. They said, unlike the Army which has its own hospitals, paramilitary personnel have to get themselves and their family treated in government/private hospitals and then seek reimbursements.
