Gujarat: Arun Sharma named CBI joint director

Sharma’s name had cropped up in a CD during Ishrat encounter probe.

Gujarat cadre IPS officer Arun Kumar Sharma has been appointed as joint director of the CBI for “an initial period of five years”. Sharma, a 1987-batch officer, is currently heading  Ahmedabad crime branch as special commissioner, a post allotted to him earlier this year. The CBI has wrapped up its probe in the encounter cases of Sohrabuddin Sheikh, his wife Kauser Bi, Tulsiram Prajapati and Ishrat Jahan. The probe into the encounter of Sadiq Jamal Mehtar is still on.

During Ishrat encounter probe, Sharma’s name had cropped up in a CD in which he was allegedly found in a purported meeting along with other officers for “derailing the investigation”.  His name had cropped up in the alleged snooping on a young woman architect.

The term of Gujarat cadre officer Keshav Kumar, who is posted as joint director, has been extended by a year.
