The 19 surviving goats seized from the dhow MSV Yusufi in April were put down at Sakarbai Dinshaw Petit Hospital for Animals in Parel Friday afternoon. Police had moved the Ballard estate court in early July for permission to destroy the goats carrying a contagious disease. Police also said they were unable to care for the animals. The court accepted our application Thursday and lethal injections were administered to the animals today, said H G Shinde, assistant commissioner,Yellow Gate police station. Coast Guard had seized 32 goats with cigarettes and electronic goods from the dhow on April 4. The goats had been kept at Mumbai Port Trust under police protection. Initially,it was suspected drugs had been surgically placed in their bodies. Two rounds of x-ray revealed presence of a foreign object in the bellies of three goats and they were operated on. The surgeries found small plastic pouches containing a mystery white substance. However,a forensic examination showed it was not narcotic. srinath.rao@expressindia.com
