North Kashmir: Two jawans, one civilian killed in avalanche

An Army spokesperson said that one soldier was found unhurt by the avalanche.

Two Army men and a civilian porter were killed when an army vehicle came under an avalanche in the higher reaches of North Kashmir’s Kupwara district on Saturday. The army had earlier launched a massive search operation to rescue them in the reaches of Shamsabari Range.

A defense spokesperson said that a Junior Commissioned Officer and the porter suffered “fatal casualties in the avalanche”.

“One soldier suffered injuries and was immediately evacuated to military hospital,” he said. “Search and rescue operations have concluded this evening.”

The spokesperson said that one soldier was found unhurt by the avalanche.

He said that one Junior Commissioned Officer, three Jawans and one civilian porter had got trapped after an avalanche hit the area.

“Today at approximately 8 am, an Army link patrol, operating in the areas South of Nasta Chun Pass were overrun by an avalanche, triggered from the higher reaches of Shamshabari Ranges,” the spokesperson said.

He said that Army Avalanche Rescue Teams located at the Nasta Chun Pass immediately launched the search operation.
