Even as a Delhi Court prepares to hear a fake degree case against HRD Minister Smriti Irani shortly after Delhi Minister Jitender Singh Tomar was arrested on similar grounds, the Congress in Tripura has asked the Election Commission of India to disqualify a ruling Communist Party of India (Marxist) MLA over yet another such case.
Leader of Opposition in the Tripura state assembly Sudip Roy Barman has written to the ECI complaining that Golaghat constituency MLA Keshab Debbarma has furnished differing educational qualifications in two state-wide election affidavits.
The letter details how Debbarma claimed in his 2008 election affidavit that he passed madhyamik under the state board in 1992, but that the affidavit filed by the MLA in 2013 states that he passed madhyamik in 1989 from the state board.

The opposition leader has also asked the ECI to take legal action against the MLA, who won the Golaghat constituency in both the elections by raking in more than half the total votes each time.
In an email to journalists, Congress spokesperson Dr Ashok Sinha wrote, “There was a complaint against a Minister of Delhi Govt regarding false affidavit about educational qualification in elections. He was arrested promptly. There is an MLA in Tripura [who] filed false affidavit. We wrote to the Election Commission on 29th May 2015, well, the Election Commission did not bother to reply.”
