Deotale faces public ire in flood-hit Chandrapur
Flood-hit residents of Chandrapur vented their ire at District Guardian Minister Sanjay Deotale on Sunday, forcing the police to use force to disperse the crowd
Flood-hit residents of Chandrapur vented their ire at District Guardian Minister Sanjay Deotale on Sunday, forcing the police to use force to disperse the crowd.
Deotale was on a visit to the city, most parts of which have been reeling under floods caused by torrential rains over the past few days.
At Sister Colony,Deotales convoy was allegedly pelted with stones. According to reports, police resorted to lathicharge after this, injuring 12 persons. Seven persons have been arrested,it is learnt.
Superintendent of Police Rajendra Jain said: The incident occurred after the minister left, though we dont have reports of stone-pelting. Also, force was used to disperse the crowd. No lathicharge has been reported to me, he told The Indian Express. If I see stone-pelting in the videos taken by mediapersons,we will take action, he added.
The people were complaining that no permanent measures were being taken either by the district administration or the municipal corporation to tackle the frequent floods. They also alleged that relief was not reaching them despite announcements.
The minister tried to assuage their feelings but when he saw the crowd swelling he decided to leave the place. According to reports, when his convoy started to move,Congress as well as BJP workers started sloganeering, and the crowd started hurling stones at the convoy. It is alleged that some workers of both the parties had told the people that Deotale would distribute relief money. The people reacted angrily when the reports turned out to be false. The police now suspect it to be a well-planned riot.
