Calling the NDA government’s reported move to drop amendments to the land bill a “mockery of Parliamentary democracy”, the CPM on Tuesday questioned the need to promulgate ordinances while the Joint Parliamentary Panel was still debating the matter.

“If you are going back to the old land bill by dropping the amendments then why did you bring three ordinances? Why did you waste the time of Parliament? BJP opposed our amendments proposals earlier. Then the government brought three ordinances. Now they are bringing the same old bill. Is it not a mockery of Parliamentary democracy and an attempt to negate the very foundation of democracy?” CPM general secretary Sitaram Yechury said.
Meanwhile, a meeting of the Joint Committee of Parliament on the Land Bill scheduled for Tuesday was postponed till August 10 following a demand by the Congress. The party had sought postponement after 25 of its MPs were suspended for five days by Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan.
The committee will now have to seek a fresh extension as its deadline ends on August 7.
