CPI state secretary D Pandian’s car was set on fire by unidentified miscreants on Thursday night, badly damaging the vehicle. The incident happened in Chennai when Pandian was away in Madurai, campaigning for the Sri Lankan Tamil Protection Movement.
Speaking to reporters, party MLA Mahendran said that the Government should initiate serious investigation into the incident and bring the culprits to book.
CPI and more importantly its secretary was in the forefront of launching the umbrella group SLTPM,comprising of MDMK,PMK,CPI and VCK. Pandian also single-handedly took the Left to the AIADMK camp after the trust vote on Indo-US nuclear deal parted the comrades’ path with DMK’s.
Following the incident, the police have given tight protection to his house in city.
Meanwhile, the State unit of Congress has decided to throw its weight behind the Sri Lankan Tamil Welfare Rights Forum,a group floated by the DMK to press for the safety of Tamil civilians in Lanka.
The forum would organize public meetings from Saturday. TNCC president KV Thangkabalu and MoS GK Vasan will attend the meeting in Chennai on Saturday, while Home Minister P Chidambaram will address a meeting at his home district Sivagangai on February 9,said Thangkabalu on Thursday.
