Congress harps on development plank

Ruling Congress candidate for the coming election to the lone Mizoram Lok Sabha seat,said that his priorities would be development especially generation of more energy from the state.

C L Ruala,ruling Congress candidate for the coming election to the lone Mizoram Lok Sabha seat,said that his priorities would be development especially generation of more energy from the state while opposition comibe nominee H Lallungmuana would concentrate on safeguards of the Mizos.

Talking to media persons,the Ruala (72) said that his age,rather than an impediment would be to his advantage along with his long career and experiences if elected to represent the state in the Parliament.

“My long experience as state Power Minister and acquaintances with the leaders in Delhi would help me in pressing for more generation of power for the state of Mizoram,” he said.

He added that mineral wealth of the state,if properly exploited would greatly benefit the people and create more lucrative jobs for the educated youths.

Stating that he had been in active politics since he was 32-years-old which would come in handy when meeting Central leadership on developmental issues.

Lallungmuana,an independent candidate supported by the opposition Mizo National Front (MNF) and the Mizoram Peoples Conference (MPC),on the other hand said that he would work towards the maximum safeguards for the Mizo people.

“The United Nations has adopted the Declaration of the rights of the indigenous people and I would strive for the rightful claims of the Mizos in regards to protection of mineral and forest wealth for the sons of the soil,” Lallungmuana said.

Passing the responsibilities of procuring developmental funds from the Centre to the state government,he said that his responsibilities,if elected to the Parliament,would be to “protect the Mizo culture and rights as indigenous people”.

“My top priority is the survival of the Mizos by protection through implementation of the UN Delclaration of the Rights of the Indigenous People by the Indian government,” he added.

He started his campaign trail from yesterday while Ruala had kicked off his campaign from March 24 by visiting southern parts of the state during the past one week.
