Cops ‘helped convicts go home’,booked

Sangrur: The police have busted an alleged nexus between murder convicts lodged in Sangrur jail and constables,including a jail pharmacist,and registered an FIR against all. Five constables were booked for allegedly helping the prisoners use cellphones and visit their houses instead of the hospital. SSP Mandeep Singh Sidhu said three murder convicts used to regularly go to Rajindra Medical Hospital in Patiala for treatment. The referral slip was signed by pharmacist Harish Gupta,advising that the prisoners needed to go to hospital. The prisoners used to give Rs 1,000 per slip to Gupta and take a guard along with them,Sidhu said. The accused constables used to take turns to accompany the prisoners. However,the convicts would bypass the hospital and instead go to their house and be back by evening,Sidhu said.

2-yr-old’s rape: Cops yet to identify accused

LUDHIANA: A day after a two-and-half-year-old girl was raped and left bleeding on the road in Haibowal,the Ludhiana police is yet to identify the accused. ADCP Neelambari Vijay Jagdale,who is heading the probe,on Tuesday visited the house of the victim and recorded the statements of her parents and neighbours.

Train hits car at crossing,sisters die

JALANDHAR: Two sisters were killed when the car they were travelling in was hit by a DEMU on an unmanned railway crossing near Gaandhran village on the Nakodar-Lohian railway track on Wednesday. The deceased have been identified as Kamla (65),a resident of village Jhingra near Bhogpur and Shanti (60),an NRI.

Eight arrested for lynching elderly man

Chandigarh: Rohtak police on Wednesday arrested eight persons on charges of murdering an elderly man,mistaking him to be a member of the Kala Kachcha gang in Muradpur Tekna village on Sunday. The police had constituted special teams to identify the eight persons who had battered the man to death.

17 arrested for theft,robbery

Patiala: Police have reportedly busted the Pardi gang and Burglars’ gang with the arrest of 17 people allegedly involved in thefts and robberies,and recovered ornaments worth Rs 24 lakh. Patiala SSP Hardial Singh Mann said that 12 members of Pardi Gang and five members of Burglars’ Gang were held.

4-year-old ‘raped’ by uncle

Nakodar (Jalandhar): A four-year-old girl child was allegedly raped by her maternal uncle. Police arrested the accused,Shalu Chauhan of Nakodar. Sources said the child had been taken to PGI for treatment.
